Japan's new Emperor Naruhito formally ascended to the throne Tuesday in an elaborate ceremony in Tokyo. Naruhito read out a proclamation at the Imperial Palace, promising to fulfill his responsibility as the symbol of the state and of the unity of the people.  The brief event ended with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe congratulating the new emperor and leading the crowd with three shouts of "Banzai!," which means 10,000 years of long life.  More than one hundred foreign dignitaries were in attendance, including Britain's Prince Charles. Naruhito officially began his reign on the...

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is ramping up pressure on his Western allies, as the end of a U.S.-brokered cease-fire approaches with Syrian Kurdish rebels. Erdogan's escalating rhetoric comes ahead of a pivotal meeting Tuesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin. With international pressure continuing to grow on Ankara to end its military operation against the rebels, Erdogan lashed out at criticism of the operation in northeastern Syria. British Parliament Speaker Blocks New Brexit Vote
Tuesday, 22 October 2019 10:34 WIB | Global

British Parliament Speaker John Bercow on Monday blocked the House of Commons from holding a new vote on Brexit, the latest setback for Prime Minister Boris Johnson in his effort to have Britain divorce itself from the European Union. British lawmakers had failed to support Johnson's exit plan Saturday and Bercow said the attempt to hold a new vote "will not be debated today as it would be repetitive and disorderly to do so." Johnson last week struck a Brexit deal with the 27 other EU countries, but the lawmakers voted to delay their backing for the agreement until legislation is approved...

At least six civilians and three soldiers are said to have died during cross-border skirmishes between Pakistani and Indian troops late on October 19, reportedly making it one of the deadliest days since New Delhi revoked the special status of Indian-administered Kashmir in August. The conflicting reports from each side suggested the death toll could still rise from the late-night incident. Pakistani Army spokesman Major General Asif Ghafoor, in a tweet on Sunday, blamed "unprovoked" shelling from the Indian side of the de facto Line of Control that he claimed was "deliberately targeting...

Hong Kong protesters flooded the city's streets on Sunday in defiance of a ban by the authorities on their march, setting up roadblocks and tossing firebombs amid the firing of tear gas by police. Protest leaders carried a black banner at the front of the procession that read, "Five main demands, not one less," as they pressed their calls for accountability and political rights in the semi-autonomous Chinese territory. Police beefed up security measures for the unauthorized rally, the latest chapter in unrest that has disrupted life in the financial hub since early June.  Black-clad...

Trump Cancels Plan to Hold G-7 at His Miami Golf Club
Monday, 21 October 2019 10:30 WIB | Global

In a series of Tweets Saturday night U.S. President Donald Trump said he was canceling plans to hold the 2020 G-7 summit at a golf resort he owns in Miami, Florida. The U.S. president last week had confirmed plans to hold the annual summit at the Trump National Doral, but his plans had drawn wide condemnation from political opponents and some Republicans, who said the president would benefit financially from holding it there. He blamed the U.S. national media and Democrats for opposing the Doral site for the meeting of the leaders of the West's leading economies.  œI thought I was...
