Hong Kong shares ended higher Friday, extending the previous day's near-three percent gains, as global markets were boosted by a better-than-expected reading on US jobs creation. The Hang Seng Index jumped 0.99 percent, or 248.93 points, to 25,373.12. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rose 2.01 percent, or 62.24 points, to 3,152.81 while the Shenzhen Composite Index on China's second exchange rallied 1.28 percent, or 25.84 points, to 2,041.89. U.S. stock index futures were lower on Tuesday morning, as traders waited to hear from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. At around 04:52 a.m. ET, Dow futures slipped 112 points, indicating a negative open of more than 119 points. Futures on the S&P and Nasdaq were also lower. Wall Street closed lower on Monday on the back of negative sentiment in the tech sector. However, the big focus this Tuesday is on the Federal Reserve. European stocks opened lower Tuesday as diminished hopes of a rate cut from the U.S. Federal Reserve this month continue to dampen investor sentiment. The pan-European Stoxx 600 fell 0.3% at 388.37 after the opening bell, chemicals stocks plunging 2.2% while autos and basic resources both fell by more than 1.2% as almost all sectors entered negative territory. Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei index edged up Tuesday on a cheaper yen in sluggish trade, with the market focused on the Federal Reserve's interest rate stance after strong US jobs figures. Japan's Nikkei share average gained on Tuesday morning as a retreat in the yen helped to lift some exporters while Apple suppliers and other technology firms dropped, in step with Apple. The Nikkei share average rose 0.3% to 21,598 while the broader Topix rose 0.1% to 1,579.61 at midmorning trade. The yen slipped to 108.85 yen per dollar from around 108.30 at the local stock market close on Monday, prompting buying in exporter shares such as Honda Motor, which rose 0.4%. Source : Reuters
