Hong Kong shares ended higher Friday, extending the previous day's near-three percent gains, as global markets were boosted by a better-than-expected reading on US jobs creation. The Hang Seng Index jumped 0.99 percent, or 248.93 points, to 25,373.12. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rose 2.01 percent, or 62.24 points, to 3,152.81 while the Shenzhen Composite Index on China's second exchange rallied 1.28 percent, or 25.84 points, to 2,041.89. Hong Kong stocks ended on a positive note Wednesday with attention now turning to the start of key congressional testimony from Federal Reserve boss Jerome Powell later in the day. The Hang Seng Index added 0.31 percent, or 88.41 points, to 28,204.69. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index slipped 0.44 percent, or 12.93 point, to 2,915.30, while the Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China's second exchange, lost 0.46 percent, or 7.24 points, to 1,550.87. European stocks opened lower Wednesday as investors await a testimony from U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell in the hope for hints on imminent interest rate cuts from the central bank. Japan's Nikkei edged lower in choppy trade on Wednesday as investors awaited key testimony on the U.S. economy from the Federal Reserve chief, while machinery shares fell on poor June orders.
