The S&P 500 was flat Thursday as it aimed to wrap up its best first-quarter performance in five years. The broad market index was little changed, as was the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The Nasdaq Composite was also trading unchanged. For the quarter, the S&P 500 is up about 10%. It is on pace for its best first-quarter gain since 2019, when it rallied 13.1%. The 30-stock Dow, up 5.5% during the period, is tracking for its strongest first-quarter performance since 2021 when it advanced 7.4%. The Nasdaq is up 9.3% in the quarter thus far. Source: CNBC

European markets opened lower Wednesday, with banking stocks still in negative territory following the global Silicon Valley Bank fallout. The pan-European Stoxx 600 index was down 0.4% toward the start of trade, with most sectors and major bourses trading in the red. Retail stocks led losses with a 1.9% drop, followed by oil and gas stocks, which were down 1.4%. Banking stocks were down 0.5%. Tokyo stocks closed marginally higher on Wednesday as worries about the US banking sector eased, with investors' focus shifting back to inflation. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index rose 0.03 percent, or 7.44 points, to end at 27,229.48, while the broader Topix index closed up 0.65 percent, or 12.58 points, at 1,960.12. Source : AFP

Hong Kong stocks opened with healthy gains Wednesday morning as concerns over possible contagion from the collapse of two US banks eased, while data showed inflation in the country lessened last month. The Hang Seng Index jumped 1.43 percent, or 275.53 points, to 19,523.49. The Shanghai Composite Index added 0.48 percent, or 15.72 points, to 3,261.03, while the Shenzhen Composite Index on China's second exchange gained 0.52 percent, or 10.75 points, to 2,086.68. Tokyo stocks opened higher Wednesday, as worries about the US banking sector eased and helped to boost New York shares.
