America Imposes New Additional Sanctions on Iran
Thursday, 9 January 2020 11:10 WIB | GLOBAL |Iran,GlobalAmerika

US President Donald Trump announced Wednesday (8/1) that he would soon receive additional heavy sanctions on Iran. This was done one day after Iran fired on two Iraqi military bases where there were American troops. The missile shootings were carried out in retaliation for the assassination of the Chief of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, General Qassem Soleimani, by the Americans.

"These sanctions will continue until Iran changes its behavior," Trump said in a definition from the White House.

Iran has been subjected to many adverse sanctions, which reach billions of dollars per year, does submitting a new application raise the question: What else can be imposed on Iran?

Every sector of Iran's economy has been subjected to severe sanctions, said Iranian expert Kenneth Katzman of the Congressional Research Service, "there is not much that can be done other than sanctions that have been imposed before this."

Iran's natural gas exports, which have yet to be penalized, could be targeted, Katzman said. But that would be detrimental to buyers such as Turkey, an American ally.

Supporters of sanctions against Iran say there are still many sanctions that can be imposed.

"There are other areas that could be subject to sanctions, specifically the questionable leader's assets, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps," said Annie Fixler, analyst at a conservative research institute.

The White House did not provide information about additional sanctions submitted to President Trump. A Ministry of Finance spokesman said he had no information about the new sanctions being approved.
