The government shutdown is now a day away from tying for the longest on record
Friday, 11 January 2019 11:44 WIB | GLOBAL |Global

At 20 days in length as of Thursday, the current partial government shutdown has become one for the record books.

It ranks as the second-longest shutdown in records that go back more than 40 years, topped only by a 21-day closure during the Clinton administration that began in December 1995. If it continues, it will match the length of the Clinton-era shutdown on Friday, and it will become the longest one on record on Saturday.

The current shutdown has topped one during the Carter presidency that lasted 17 days and began in the fall of 1978, and it has exceeded one during the Obama administration that lasted 16 days and began in the fall of 2013.

Analysts have noted the impact of the current shutdown is somewhat limited, because it™s only affecting agencies that represent about 25% of total government spending.

The ongoing shutdown has been sparked by a dispute over money for President Donald Trump's proposed wall at the southern border. The president on Wednesday left a negotiating session after clashing with Democrats, and Trump stated Thursday that he could declare a national emergency in order to build his wall, saying œprobably I will do it. I would almost say definitely.
